From historic times, the Persian people have celebrated the arrival of the New Year with bonfires. This popular custom is a remainder from the native Zoroastrian faith that was crushed when the Muslim invaders imposed their own religion on the defeated country.

As the traditional Zoroastrian New Year approached, Dr. Yazdi called on the people of Iran to conduct massive peaceful demonstrations by practicing their ancient custom.

The predictable harsh response from the ruling theocracy came swiftly. By Sunday, March 20, celebrants were being shackled and lashed..

...and hanged in Tehran.
