Hei Tiki

As promised Guy., a picture of the Hei Tiki I gave Joe for his birthday.

To explain the meaning or significance/importance of this gift it is best approached by giving you it's name by the carver Lewis Gardiner...Kaitiakitanga, translation (loose) Guardian of the Future. Common name for these types of pendants is Hei Tiki, (hanging pendant).

Many people think they are ugly, however, to Maori this a is a beautiful, powerful symbol, of strength, wisdom and trust. It respects the wearer to be one strong enough to bear the burdens of life for the betterment of future generations. Posted by Hello

Guy, yes it is a traditionally worn as a single piece.

Joe's Hei Tiki is 5" long by 2" wide at the widest part of the carving, and, like you he wears no other jewellery. However, on his acubra, which he wears almost everywhere, he has the Eagle, Globe and Anchor badge, along with the ANZAC Sunburst badge (this being given to him by my family)
